In this paper, we present an application of the constrained renormalization method (CRM) for speckle noise suppression in digital images. The method is tested on various types of images obtained using a synthetic-aperture radar (SAR), sonar, and medical ultrasound. The fundamental possibility of a significant reduction in the speckle noise level was discovered due to the fact that CRM renormalizes the spectrum of the acoustic image to the model of the universal reference spectrum (URS), which is a model of the spectrum of the optical image of “good” quality. To improve the overall sharpness after applying CRM, it is recommended to use additional processing suitable for each specific type of image. It is proposed to estimate the degree of speckle noise suppression using the standard deviation from the image averaged over a floating window (sprite). Based on the performed study, we can conclude that the application of CRM to various digital images can significantly reduce their inherent speckle noise.
