The fundamental principles of soil moisture retrieval by means of the use of passive microwave sensors and microwave radiometric technique for measuring soil moisture properties have been established by Shutko and his disciples. There was realized a series of experiments in framework of which microwave radiometers were put on satellites, aircraft, and ground-based vehicles. The L-band passive microwave measurements were the most informative in these experiments. Two methods are described to be used for the microwave monitoring of soil moisture as global water cycle component. First method is based on the empirical model of vertical profile of water moisture as function of radiobrightness temper atures. Second method consists in the solution of inverse task based on the multi-channel measurements.
