Аннотация

By using direct modelling of the electromagnetic field in an occultation experiment, a numeric solution of the parabolic diffraction equation was used to investigate power and frequency variations of the signal received by a satellite moving in orbit around Venus. Conditions under which diffraction distortions affected the electromagnetic field as well as the applicability of geometrical optics for the interpretation of finely layered structure of the lower ionosphere, present in actual data, was analyzed for X-, S- and L-band signals. The processing method used on Venus-15 and -16 occultation data was validated and the existence of multilayered structures in electron concentration profiles in the lower ionosphere was confirmed. In this work ray diffraction calculations were compared with the VENERA-15, -16 experimental data; criteria for the applicability of the geometrical optics approximation in probing multilayer plasma structures in occultation experiments in the lower ionosphere on Venus were determined; and vertical profiles of electron concentration reconstructed in ray approximation from occultation data were validated. Keywords: Venus, radio wave propagation, occultation, ionosphere.
