ics of Russian Academy of Sciences, the Department of Solid State Electronics and

Abstract
Optical absorption in topological insulators and possible photoelectric effects are
discussed and studied theoretically. It is shown that absorption of circularly polarized
electromagnetic waves in two-dimensional topological insulators results in electric
current in the conducting 1D edge channels, the direction of the current being
determined by the light polarization. The model of the current appearing due to
magnetic dipole electron transitions stimulated by irradiation of frequency below
the bulk energy gap is developed.

Spin-polarized Current in Two-Dimensional Topological Insulator due to Elec-
tric Dipole Transitions

ics of Russian Academy of Sciences, the Department of Solid State Electronics and

Abstract
2D HgTe/CdTe quantum well topological insulator illuminated by circularly polarized
light with frequencies higher than the difference between the equilibrium Fermi
level and the bottom of the conduction band (THz range) is studied theoretically.
We show that electron-hole asymmetry results in spin-dependent electric dipole
transitions between edge and bulk states, and we predict an occurrence of a
circular photocurrent. If the edge state is tunnel-coupled to a conductor, then the
photocurrent can be detected by measuring an electromotive force in the conductor,
which is proportional to the photocurrent.
